Maurice took his first job in the world of design at age 17. This was designing labels that were to be woven into garments.
After this, he tried various occupations and was eventually drawn into teaching. Maurice decided to combine teaching with his original interests and obtained a teaching certificate, and then a degree in Education and Creative Design.
During his time at Loughborough College an interest in jewellery making developed, particularly silversmithing and lapidary (engraving, cutting or polishing of gems). This produced an appreciation of the beauty of precious and semi-precious stones and leading on from that, the importance of the cut of the stone to enhance that beauty.
The general theme of Maurice's jewellery is colour and shape, and his aim is to reveal the qualities inherent in the stones. This has resulted in a style of jewellery, which explores the natural beauty of the stones, in large free shapes, mixed with gemstone beads in contrasting colours to create striking necklaces and earrings.
