Bernard has a degree in Fine Art from Durham University, and has taught design and ceramics in schools and colleges for over 30 years. Since retiring he has been experimenting with various media including reclaimed and recycled materials, initially to produce two-dimensional images, but later moving into more three-dimensional work. The theme of ‘boat sculptures’ emerged over time and this is what he now enjoys and concentrates on.
His sculptures vary in size from a metre in length down to a few centimetres – the size being dictated mainly by the materials he finds. he can often be observed visiting skips and factory sites looking for suitable materials. Old furniture, gates and fencing for example form a rich supply of ‘hulls’ and umbrella frames provide an excellent supply of masts. However, he finds much of what we discard can be put to use. The rustier and more damaged, the better.
"Essentially I want my sculptures to be fun but I hope that by using the materials in a witty and imaginative way I can bring out the beauty in much that we throw away".
Julian Spencer - Gilded Clocks
A range of traditionally gilded wooden mantle and wall clocks, hand made by Julian Spencer in Cornwall.
Each clock is cut to size, the wooden surface is then coated with several layers of super-fine plaster called Gesso. The Gesso is used to even out any imperfections or grain in the wood. Once dry and sanded smooth, the next stage is to apply two coats of Boll. Boll is a ceramic bases pigment that seals the Gesso, and acts as an undercoat for the metal leaf to be applied. Before the leaf can be applied, a thin coat od gold-size is brushed onto the surface, the leaf is then applied by hand whilst the size is still tacky. The final finish is crated by a combination of burnishing and antiquing techniques. Each clock is an individual piece, no two are ever exactly alike.
Prices range from £49.95 for the mantle clocks, £59.95 for the long rectangular and square wall clocks, to £64.95 for the disk wall clocks.
Wayne Glover - Woodworker
Wayne has been producing a wide range of furniture using reclaimed materials for the past few years. He is based in a small Leicestershire village, but travels all over the country searching out quality materials for his work.
We currently have a selection of his very individually styled clocks, mirrors, candle blocks and some of his more quirky pieces of furniture.
The beauty of all of his work is in the character of the wood and slate and other materials he uses. All have had a previous use, and all have a 'lived-in' look about them. As you would expect, every piece is individually made, no two pieces will ever be exactly alike.
Clocks start at £35.95, mirrors range in price from £19.95 - £59.95. The individual candle blocks are £3.95 each.
Charles Waterfield Clocks
In addition to the wallclocks that we keep instock, Charles has designed a fabulous longcase (Grandfather) clock, hand crafted from solid, sustainable English Oak.
The 'Hayrack' clock has a design which is classic with a modern feel, and each one made will be unique to the gallery. No two will be exactly the same.
The clock features;
Eight day movement.
Hand painted face showing a victorian gentleman in period hunting pose with his dogs. The face has been painted by reknowned artist Fred McMain, and is complimented by black serpentine hands.
Full Westminster 4/4 chime, with eight rod steel chime assembly and brass weights and chains.
Chain suspended weight-driven pendulum movement.
Automatic pendulum beat adjustment.
Chime on/off, and automatic night time silencer.
The clock is priced at £2,695, and includes delivery within 50 miles of the gallery, and full installation by Charles Waterfield. Delivery and installation outside this area will be at an extra cost.
This clock is currently on display in the gallery.
Charles recently obtained an oak beam from HMS Victory, Lord Nelson's famous flagship. From this he created a one-off longcase clock which became part of the Victory collection, and was sold at auction in Norfolk for over £10,000 during 2008. The face for this clock was also painted by Fred McMain, who is well known for his detailed nautical and aviation pictures.
A brass dial, with a twenty nine and a half day lunar calendar is available to order as an alternative to the hand painted dial.
Graham Gallagher - Walking Sticks
Graham has produced a range of individually crafted walking and thumb sticks from his workshop in Warwickshire.
The sticks have a substantial hazel shaft, the tops are either turned wood or carved horn. All sticks have a rubber foot.
All sticks on display in the gallery are priced at £29.95.
Audrey Gallop - Pyrography
Audrey has created a collection of individually turned owls using mainly Laburnum & Yew, which she has then hand-decorated using Pyrography.
Pyrography is a technique used to burn designs into wood. This technique, plus the grain of the wood means that every owl Audrey creates is unique in design.
Prices range from £6.95 for small owls to £14.95 for large ones.
